These Are the 10 Least Obedient Dog Breeds

When people hear “least obedient,” they often assume a dog is unintelligent. In reality, many of the breeds on this list are highly intelligent—they just weren’t bred to constantly look to humans for direction.

Many were developed to hunt, track, guard, or work independently, which means they often prefer making their own decisions. While all of these dogs can be trained successfully, they typically require more patience, consistency, and creativity than eager-to-please breeds like Labrador Retrievers or Golden Retrievers.

10. Beagle

Beagles were bred to follow scent trails for hours without distraction, which can make obedience training a challenge.

Once a Beagle catches an interesting scent, your commands often become background noise. Their friendly personalities make them wonderful family dogs, but their noses frequently have other plans.

9. Borzoi

Originally developed to hunt wolves across vast Russian landscapes, Borzois are elegant, independent thinkers.

They can learn commands quickly, but often decide whether following them is worth their time. Their strong prey drive means secure fencing and leashes are essential.

8. Welsh Terrier

Welsh Terriers are energetic, confident dogs with a stubborn streak.

Originally bred to hunt foxes and badgers, they have no shortage of determination. They thrive when given plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation.

7. Dachshund

Despite their small size, Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals.

That fearless independence remains today. They can be difficult to house-train and may test boundaries if owners aren’t consistent with training.

6. Pekingese

For centuries, Pekingese lived as royal companion dogs in Chinese palaces.

As a result, many seem to believe they’re still royalty. Intelligent but often stubborn, they prefer being treated as equals rather than subordinates.

5. Bloodhound

Bloodhounds possess one of the most powerful noses in the animal kingdom.

While they are capable of learning commands, following an interesting scent usually takes priority. Once they lock onto a trail, their determination is almost impossible to interrupt.

4. Bulldog

Modern Bulldogs are lovable companions, but they often approach training at their own pace.

They aren’t typically disobedient out of defiance. Instead, they’re famous for being stubborn and deciding when—or if—they feel like cooperating.

3. Chow Chow

Chow Chows are known for their dignified, cat-like personalities.

They tend to be independent, reserved, and less interested in pleasing people than many other breeds. Early socialization and consistent training are especially important.

2. Basenji

Often called the “cat of the dog world,” the Basenji is highly intelligent but notoriously independent.

These dogs are known for solving problems on their own and are less motivated by praise than many other breeds. Their curiosity and athleticism can also make containment a challenge.

1. Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound consistently tops lists of the least obedient dog breeds.

Originally bred to hunt independently across rugged terrain, Afghan Hounds developed strong decision-making instincts. They can certainly learn commands, but whether they choose to follow them is another matter entirely.

Their intelligence, independence, and strong prey drive make them one of the most challenging breeds for novice owners.
