10 Plants You Basically Can’t Kill (Even If You Forget About Them)

Black Thumb? We Got You

Want to be a plant person… but also forget to water things? You’re not alone.

Good news: some houseplants are incredibly forgiving. While no plant is truly indestructible, these varieties can handle missed waterings, imperfect light, and a little neglect without immediately giving up on you.

10. Lucky Bamboo

Technically not true bamboo, this plant is known for its resilience.

It can grow in water or soil, tolerates low light, and requires little attention. Just keep the water clean and avoid direct sunlight.

9. Succulents

Succulents store water in their leaves, which makes them drought-tolerant.

They’re great for forgetful plant owners, but here’s the catch: they need bright light. Overwatering is the fastest way to kill them.

8. Orchids

Orchids have a reputation for being fussy, but many common varieties (like Phalaenopsis) are surprisingly manageable.

They don’t need frequent watering—just good light and occasional care. Definitely not the hardest plant, but not the easiest either.

7. Peace Lily

Peace lilies are dramatic in a helpful way.

They visibly droop when they need water, then perk back up quickly after a drink. They tolerate low light, but are toxic to pets, so placement matters.

6. Anthurium

These glossy, heart-shaped plants are fairly low-maintenance and long-lasting.

However, they are not pet-safe (contrary to popular belief) and prefer bright, indirect light to thrive.

5. Philodendron

One of the easiest houseplants around.

Philodendrons tolerate low light, irregular watering, and still manage to grow. Just note that they’re also toxic to pets.

4. Dragon Tree

This spiky, sculptural plant is extremely forgiving.

It handles low light, dry air, and inconsistent watering well, making it perfect for beginners. Like other dracaenas, it’s toxic to pets.

3. Snake Plant

Arguably the ultimate low-maintenance plant.

It tolerates low light, drought, and neglect better than most. Just don’t overwater it. (Also mildly toxic to pets.)

2. Air Plants

Air plants don’t need soil, but they’re not totally hands-off.

They require bright light and occasional soaking or misting. Easy once you know the routine, but not completely carefree.

1. Money Plant (Pothos)

This is the gold standard for “unkillable” plants.

Pothos thrives in low light, survives missed waterings, and grows quickly. It’s perfect for beginners, but again, not pet-safe.
