10 Unfinished TV Cliffhangers People Still Talk About

A good cliffhanger makes you want the next episode immediately. A bad one leaves you staring at the credits because the next episode never comes.

These 10 TV shows left fans with big questions and no real payoff. Some were canceled too early, while others ended in ways that still feel unfinished years later.

10. Angel (Ended 2004)

angel
The WB

Angel ends with Angel and his team charging into one last battle before the screen cuts to black. Some fans call it a bold ending. Others call it a cliffhanger with better lighting. Either way, the outcome never appears onscreen, so the debate has never really gone away.

9. The Society (Ended 2019)

Netflix

The Society ended its first season with a reveal clearly designed to launch season two. Then Netflix canceled it after renewing it, leaving the show’s biggest mystery suspended in place. That is the streaming-era version of a trapdoor. Fans got the setup, but never the payoff.

8. Agent Carter (Ended 2016)

agent carter
ABC

Agent Carter closed with Jack Thompson getting shot by an unseen attacker while Peggy Carter’s file was stolen. The series ended before those threads could continue, leaving one of Marvel TV’s cleanest cliffhangers unresolved. It was a strong hook. It also led absolutely nowhere onscreen.

7. Mork & Mindy (Ended 1982)

mork and mindy
ABC

Mork & Mindy originally left its title characters stranded in prehistoric times, which is not the usual sitcom sign-off. Later scheduling changes softened the ending a bit, but the cliffhanger still lingers in the show’s history. Most sitcoms go for warmth. This one briefly chose time-displacement chaos.

6. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (Ended 1997)

lois & clark
ABC

Lois & Clark ended with Lois and Clark finding a Kryptonian baby on their doorstep, a reveal that clearly pointed to another season. ABC canceled the show before that story could continue. It was a big mystery to leave behind. Even Superman did not get an explanation.

5. Spider-Man: The Animated Series (Ended 1998)

Fox Kids

The 1990s Spider-Man cartoon built toward the “Spider Wars” storyline, then ended before Peter Parker’s search for Mary Jane could truly finish. One of the show’s biggest emotional arcs was left hanging. Superhero fans can handle multiverses, clones, and cosmic nonsense. Missing Mary Jane was harder.

4. Pushing Daisies (Ended 2009)

pushing daisies
ABC

Pushing Daisies was canceled during its second season, and the ending had to rush through material that needed more time. Some answers arrived, but key emotional threads around Ned, Chuck, and her family stayed open. The show kept its charm to the end. It just ran out of episodes.

3. Carnivàle (Ended 2005)

carnivale
HBO

Carnivàle was built for a much longer story, and HBO canceled it after only two seasons. The finale delivered major revelations and a violent showdown, but the larger conflict still had plenty of ground left to cover. Fans could see the bigger plan. They just never got to watch it.

2. My Name Is Earl (Ended 2009)

my name is earl
NBC

My Name Is Earl ended with the reveal that Earl Jr. might not actually be Earl’s son, which was a clear setup for future episodes. NBC canceled the show before season five. The creator later explained the intended ending, but it’s not just the same thing.

1. Hannibal (Ended 2015)

hannibal
NBC

Hannibal ended with Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter going over a cliff after confronting Francis Dolarhyde and each other. The finale works as an ending, but it also feels like the start of something else.

The best unresolved cliffhangers do not just leave one question behind. They leave an entire next season playing in your head.
