All dogs are intelligent in their own way—but some breeds consistently stand out when it comes to learning, problem-solving, and working alongside humans.
Much of what we know about canine intelligence comes from research popularized by Stanley Coren, who evaluated breeds based on how quickly they learn commands and how reliably they obey them.
Of course, intelligence isn’t everything. A “smart” dog may require more training, stimulation, and attention. But if you’re looking for a highly trainable and responsive companion, these breeds are widely considered among the smartest.
How Dog Intelligence Is Measured
Experts generally look at three types of canine intelligence:
- Instinctive intelligence – what a dog was bred to do (herding, retrieving, guarding)
- Adaptive intelligence – how well a dog can solve problems independently
- Working & obedience intelligence – how quickly a dog learns commands from humans
This list focuses mostly on working and obedience intelligence, which is why you’ll see many working and herding breeds near the top.
20. Flat-Coated Retriever

16. Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael)
A hardworking herding breed, the Belgian Sheepdog is highly trainable and thrives when given tasks. They’re often used in service and protection roles.
15. Schipperke
Small but mighty, Schipperkes are clever, curious, and independent thinkers. They were originally bred for pest control and still have sharp instincts.
14. Belgian Tervuren
Closely related to other Belgian herding breeds, the Tervuren is intelligent, alert, and extremely trainable. They excel in working roles and dog sports.
